Khan Noonien-Singh was presumed dead, but his eldest child knew the truth, and, she suspected, so did the pair of Afghan hounds he left behind: Julius and Augstus. Animals understood death, but abandonment was harder for them to process. Two weeks ago, these dogs were full of proud energy. They galloped through the grounds like prized show horses and held their heads high as if they knew they were genetically superior dogs who belonged to a genetically superior human.
Now they were listless and had even given up on looking longingly out the window. They had little interest in food and rarely moved if not to relieve themselves. Charaani knelt beside them and placed a gentle hand on Julius’s back. He had always been the more playful of the two, but the only response he gave was to glance sideways at Chaarani so the whites of his eyes could be seen at the corner.
