A gut punch of a story, and one that hits close to home for me. A broken man fleeing to Starfleet, looking for something to give him purpose while his heart heals from the trauma of divorce. We saw a glimpse of this in ST:2009, but unfortunately never really touched on it in the TOS run (unless I'm forgetting something). The idea that McCoy joined up to escape this hurt fits perfectly with the character we know from the series and the movies, and this particular story rings true to that portrayal. Nicely done.
I definitely felt it into my own skeleton when I wrote it, too, so I'm glad it resonated for you. McCoy mentioned his loneliness to Natira in For the World is Hollow... but they never did quite explore it. But man, is there some rich storytelling there.
