Comment on On the Nature of Wind

  1. You set the place so well. Home, for Corry. And Scotty, immediately going ‘this is a terrible idea’ the moment it is too late. Even though it isn’t. You are genuinely welcome, Scotty! (They are going to love you, and be a little bemused about how they ended up adopting you. But they will!)

And hello, Medlina. Good to meet your kind and lovely self. (Not the first unwitting victim. Ha! Nope. In this universe and others.) Teasing each other about their names. Scotty, fixing the oven. In the middle of the night, before he’d been there two minutes. Like—you could probably have waited a minute or two, Scotty, but nope, off you go. You adorable weirdo. (And the reflection back to him own home and experiences. Almost worth the trouble he got into. Sigh. You poor lad.)

Did the mug of tea make me smile, for reasons utterly unconnected with what you wrote here? Yes. Another universe has another version who would be more fussed. But I also consider his musing, that sitting at Melinda Corrigan’s table drinking tea and learning how to be a person is a kind of love.

Scotty in that recliner. Oh. Gasped a little.

Rachael, and Scotty being an entire dope because he just is, and immediately getting his heart broken. Yeah, that’s about right!

And Aaron! Hello, Aaron. You get the sense of an expanding and changing relationship between them. Not just a kid anymore. Colleague, friend, and father/son

It’s just lovely to be here at home with the Corrigan family. They aren’t perfect. They will have further problems and tragedy and hardship. But this first meeting is a delight.

    1. EVERY SINGLE TIME that I have come back to read this chapter or edit it, I've eyed that little Scot and thought, "Oh kiddo. Welcome home, even if you don't know it yet." Even if home is actually Cor, South Bristol is still a part of that definition. And I didn't know that the first time I wrote it! I knew before I let it sit that he and Corry were a fair bit tighter than I expected them to be, but it wasn't until-- I think 2008? Before I realized that Scotty knew South Bristol and loved it there. Second piece I ever wrote where both of them were in the same story and it took place on the swing bridge. Just for some AotW trivia. LOL!

Pfft. That asshole. Scotty held the mug two-handed and mouthed, oooh, Andrew Jacob, behind her back, then had to gnaw down a snicker at the glower he got back for it. I added that line specifically thinking about him lighting up and teasing your Scotty in the round robin. LOL! And yes, anytime I write about him with his like-- random ass mug and tea, now, I'm thinking about you and Montgomery Christopher.

Also yes, love him in Aaron's chair. And like-- for layers? The only okay father-figure he had was only a part of his life for a short time and he never knew it. Aaron absolutely does step in some there; not right away, and never entirely because there's only so much you can parent an adult, but in some pretty critical ways, so it's especially lovely knowing that and seeing this kid who has not really had a home he felt safe in crashed in this man's recliner because he feels something like safe there.

Thank you. <33 It's so much fun getting to go along with you as you re-read it.
