Comment on The Breaking of the Bridge

  1. We get to see what's going through Decker's mind as he plunges into the maw of the machine, going to join his crew. One hopes the commodore finds some kind of peace, be it in an afterlife or in the oblivion of non-existence. He was a bruised soul when he took command of Constellation, and had become a tortured soul by the time he met his end. A 23rd century Captain Ahab, Decker sacrificed his crew on a pyre of his own conceit when other, more rational courses of action were available.

Fun fact: William Windom was heard to remark that he didn't realize until years later that Decker was supposed to be Captain Ahab in outer space, when someone asked him about it at a convention once. I do hope the character shows up in SNW at some point, even if it completely wrecks the headcanon of this story. XD Although, Lord knows they'll be hard pressed to find anyone who can fill Windom's boots.
