Interesting that in this timeline Spock isn't commanding the Enterprise.
I think Kirk would have been better served making full disclosure to Spock and McCoy, if only to avoid Bones' outburst while trying to sell the rescue mission to Captain LeFevre.
Fortunately for them, LeFevre appears to understand the seriousness of the situation.
