Apparently being the key word. XD Even as an adult, the first truly personal thing we learn about the man is that he has a sister and nephew in TWoK. By then, we've learned at least something personal about every single other member of that bridge crew long since.
I think Scotty's very good at letting people think what they wanna think about him, and plays his cards very close to his chest.
