Transferring to a new command is rarely optimal, given that you're moving into a new environment full of unknowns. Here, at least, Leo has encountered someone with similar interests. Here's hoping the Crazy Eight ends up being a good assignment for Verde. It's certainly starting to look like a fertile locale for the man's wandering eye!
On top of just being the FNG, there's some baggage that'll be uncovered in later chapters (perhaps moreso in later stories). When I was writing the first parts of this story, specifically parts one and two, I had Bon Jovi's "Welcome to Wherever You Are" playing on heavy rotation, because I feel like that song captures the kind of melancholy he had on his long trip out to the starbase, given what he was forced to give up. In particular the lyrics, "When everybody's in and you're left out, and you feel you're drowning in the shadow of a doubt." That really put me in the mood of where Leo was at that moment.
