Comment on I Measure Every Grief I Meet

  1. I cannot get over you writing Owen and making him something even more than what I conceived him as. Perceptive and sharp and also soft in some ways. I adore what you've done with him here.

Love the mental image of Scotty with his t-shirt and sports jacket. LOL! I mean, he's clearly struggling and also clearly exhausted, but there's a delightful ferocity to him that his otherself would absolutely recognize. Even if it's one that can turn very self-destructive, that fierceness is there.

Adore him shouting out to his lover. Also adore him glaring at Jim. Also absolutely think his opening remarks are the bees knees. XD And fucking-- flicking everyone off on the last point. What perfection that is. I laughed, too, because all three points are amazing and also sharp edged.

“Three: is this class hard?” Scott grinned wolfishly at them. “Aye.” 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

And then, with energy he didn’t have, he straightened. Love that Owen knows that. I don't think too many people want to.

Owen, who hadn’t spoken to his parents in ten years, smiled dangerously. “He’s never mentioned your name.” I already mentioned this line, but oh my goddddddddd. I mean, I am having a hell of a time not keysmashing at it, but it's perfect in every way. The pointedness and the protectiveness and also the fuck you implied.

“The Captain. I need tea, Owen, and a fag.” He groaned. “Interpret that however yeh’d like, just take me home.” Love the word play and still feel my heart aching for them both. <3 Brilliant tale. As ever.

    1. You hand me an OC as fascinating and tragic as Owen, I’m going to have to try to write him! Just a bit here, in a protective mode, at the height of his life. I’m curious to see if he’ll pop up again, he’s fascinating.

I have this theory about Scotty (all of them) and their level of fierceness. Inside the chain of command, they pull back a little. In the name of duty, of discipline, of responsibility for the lives of their crew, they are pretty serious and focused guys. (Although both can and do tell superiors where to shove their orders.) Once they get outside that chain of command for whatever reason, they indulge that ferocity. Here, he’s being intentionally a rabble-rouser. Seamark, he baits the bigots. Etc. He’s pretty ragged here, but I love him with the sharp edge. (And yes. There aren’t many people who want to see how often he’s running at the desperate edge of his strength.)

I do always have a soft spot for Jim Kirk, as you know. He’s coming from a place of love here, checking in on Scotty. I appreciate Owen letting him have it, though, because it’s something that Scotty himself obviously struggles to do. He can go silent, but Kirk standing there? Chain of command comes down, and he’s “aye, sir, I’ll come over for dinner” or whatever.

So glad you enjoyed, it was a lot of fun to write.
