I'm gratified to see the Beagle's strange young captain coming across as competent despite his youth. I re-wrote this scene a few times. In the original draft, Skip stayed in his chair, which, technically, is what he should do. But it didn't feel right - it felt much more true to his character for him to immediately begin first aid while still ordering the retreat.
