Oh my god, you nailed Hemmer's entirely dry tone. LOL! Like right out of the gate. Love him greeting the nurse like it's just a casual thing, the sex going on. Which it kind of would be, in that time! Or should be! Even if Hemmer is rightfully worried about it being a manic episode.

Love Hemmer's reflections on maybe why they were assigned as roommates. And refusing to pity Scotty despite him being a mess, because pity does no one any good. Now, sympathy on the other hand--
Really enjoy Hemmer's insight and outside perspective on not only Scotty's messed up internal state, but also his ability to interact with everyone else. Even if he and Stamets are knocking heads like a horny pair of goats. XD
But then humans, in their deeply lonely way, never really knew one other. Oof, that line, tho. Damn incisive.
Finally, the whole rousting the roommate thing. A bit of lightness in all this. Hemmer playing both alarm clock and vague nag, but kindly; Scotty scrambling to get out of bed and out the door. No doubt the chief will give him a whole earful for being late!

I was a fan of Hemmer and his dry wit, and was sad to see him go. It didn’t occur to me until recently to put him in the room with Scotty, but it works in an interesting way. Hemmer has interesting insight. I suspect that the assignment as roommates was intentional, possibly for a variety of reasons that their superior officers may not even be able to fully explain.
Young Scotty—troubled and troublesome, not always thinking with his brilliant brain, with burdens that aren’t kind to carry. But also with a fundamental good cheer and a twinkle in his eye.
I’ve been trying to find my way into the Constitution, and grabbing a bunch of these challenges might just be the way into the bigger story.
