Her survival test has become a spectacle. To think this level of ritualised humiliation is a regular occurrence at the academy is pretty awful (of course, nothing in canon contradicts any of this).
Maren's fleeting thoughts of Icheb are very sweet. The idea of eating cold rations in 13'C is awful. It speaks to her commitment to the bit that she doesn't consider trying to heat her food, hot food would help so much in this sort of scenario. Icheb's thoughts about the structure of Maren's mind are interesting. Seeing how she thinks (and how that changes) as the story goes on will be fun!
Eric Atherton is a jerk. i hope he grows (also tho, grief is terribly lonely).
Its a pity she hasn't realised cracking the code will make things worse. I hope Icheb's final layer of code is enough to make her pause. The tension in this story is so delightful!
