  1. Tesseract material!! But woah, some more Tesseract Academy Year material! The exploits of Maren, Icheb and JQ back in their days at the Academy was always ripe material given the foundations of so much of their connections and relationships to one another obviously but also how from almost the outset, they were inextricably linked to the Delta Quadrant mission, almost destined. Of course, not really destined, especially as here we have Maren facing a terror of a test that might actually kill her.

From the outgo of the story premise, we are hooked because of the set up of the three trials and their designed purpose: one to demoralise, one to scare and one to kill you! I mean, is that in the prospectus? It's a helluva hook.

The fact that this task is going to challenge Maren to rely on her own wits and skills, cut off from everyone else is amping up the stakes from the outset. The fact Maren has to face the cold of the North Pole is only making it worse for her. It seems all very deliberate, with Maren smart enough to decipher it as part of the context of the test, speculating even then that JQ's designed test is going to be on Vulcan.

Maren straight away sets to working the problem, relying on her programming skills to break the rules and parameters. Because survival, as she already knows, means relying on her resourcefulness. But I doubt it will be that straightforward as a test. And the hint of a conspiracy against Maren. Given her relationship to Icheb, I can guess as to the reasoning behind the conspiracy to try and get rid of Maren.
