I pity john for the minute he lives in the world where his closest friend has cheated on his other closest friend. But it speaks to how out of character it is for Icheb to lie. And he's right, Icheb shouldn't have said a word about his secret message. I'm glad his paranoia of being followed didn't come to pass.
On to the tellerite restaurant. The way everyone speaks to each other is almost magical. Its a pity we see so little of tellerite society in canon. The disdain from the waitress when she says Terran is awesome. (as is Icheb's cheeky little tip trick). Also, the inter-species flirting solidifies John's place as the cool, training-for command one of the trio. The cool thing about fanmade stories is that characters like that get to be background instead of the focus.
