Carter is a very rare creature. She feels much more comfortable with the enlisted and NCOs than with the officers. There's just a little defensiveness there as she is one of very few officers with no college education at all. She has taken lots of certification courses, including several leadership courses within Star Fleet, but she feels just a little uneducated compared to other officers.
Of course, my stories rarely feature moral ambiguity...
