An excellent introduction to a new and promising character. Monty and Leo's relationship promises to be a long game of chess, though a convivial one. Neither of these officers can afford to underestimate the other, and both have a lot to prove to themselves and their respective benefactors.
That's a very apt way of putting it; a chess match. I'm actually kind of excited to see where that working relationship goes because Leo's worked with others that have pushed his worldview beyond the comfortable envelope before (especially in JAG, where you're meeting everyone after the worst day of their lives). Monty is definitely going to keep Leo on his toes in a good way, but I think there's capacity for conflict between them given they come from very different aspects of Starfleet. Leo's sense of justice is going to conflict with the shadowy philosophy of Monty.
