Ahhhh! This came out even more beautifully than I anticipated. From the mutations in the dreams, to the merciful death by drowning. I love how the family trades off, shares, and borrows from Deanna’s abilities. In a way, this reminds me of the compressed life that Picard experienced when he assumed the role of the patriarch on the dying planet (my favorite episode) we experience Thad’s youth, life, and loss in such a short period. Yet, the visceral loss experienced by the family is achingly slow.
This was my favorite of the prompts (even though I forgot it 🙈) and it was an achingly beautiful experience to read it.
It was so fun!! One of those rare fics that did not change in the slightest from the outline to final draft. The only part that went off-script -- just slightly -- was the Riker-Troi family dinner where Kestra wants to change her name. It was really fun to write characters who share my sense of humor, because when I write more stuffy characters, I have to edit that dialogue out XD I actually got to keep it in this time
