Given the Federation's long-term strategy towards the Cardassians, and Bajor's experience of Occupation, Kira has every reason to be angry and zero reason to trust anyone in a Starfleet uniform at this point. You wrote early-season Kira perfectly. She has no way of knowing that Picard has served with Bajorans and was quite close with Ro, and has himself been tortured by Cardassians, and thus has a better understanding of things on Bajor--and more sympathy for what Bajorans have been through--than most people in the Federation. But I'm surprised Picard didn't try to stay and smooth things over. Leaving like he did is basically saying "you're right, and I'm too scared to admit it." Or worse, "I don't think you're worth dealing with, I'm going to palm you off on my subordinate." I'd think he'd be more likely to at least apologize for offending her before leaving!

    1. Thank you for commenting and for the feedback! I guess my DS9 bias is evident here. :) You are right about Picard. I was projecting ahead to his uncomfortable and discomfiting conversation with Sisko where he's going to feel defensive. What I REALLY wanted to do was work in O'Brien because of his own experiences with the Cardassians, but he didn't fit into my time frame.

Oh, that would have been very interesting, shame you couldn't work him in.
