The pipes were frozen.

Fifteen-year-old Will Riker shimmied into the crawlspace with a flashlight clenched between his teeth. This had always been his job; Kyle had been too big to do it, and Ma too ill. But it was different doing it alone, without anyone standing at the grate to check if you were okay. Cold mud seeped through his clothes as he wrapped a heating pad around the pipe overhead. He'd be cold for hours, but at least he'd have hot water.

Somewhere across the galaxy, Kyle Riker was on a starship.

In Valdez, Will was battling frozen pipes.
