Chapter 1

Marla chose to face the consequences of her actions. She was told it was courageous to do so, but she didn’t feel very brave. She felt terrified that even stranded on another planet, Khan would find her and seek revenge for her betrayal. She felt foolish for failing to see how he manipulated her at every turn and yet still loving him so deeply, and now she had a new worry that weighed on her so heavily that existing felt like a chore.

She sat across the table from her case worker, but couldn’t bring herself to look the other woman. When she spoke, her voice was soft and frail. “I have news. It might change my situation…or maybe not, I’m not sure, but it’s important news.”

No response, but only an expectant look.

“I…I’m pregnant.”

“Is this news welcome?” The case worker’s tone was neutral and diplomatic.

“I don’t know. The father…” Her throat tightened, and she had to take a moment to steady herself before going on. “I imagine you can guess who the father is.”

A simple nod.

“I know I don’t want to terminate it even though I won’t be able to raise the child myself.” Now Marla dare to look up and speak a little bolder. “And before you ask, this isn’t because it’s his child. It’s because…because it’s mine.”
