Sulu and Chekov stood at the gym, looking at Sulu’s collection of fencing swords. Sulu had offered to teach Chekov how to fence. “Swing a few around, see which one you like.” Sulu said. “Be careful, though,” he added as Chekhov came close to hitting a pipe.

“Sorry, sir.”

Chekhov eventually chose a sabre, and they began with basic footwork. 

“Okay, so you want to put your right foot here, and your left foot there - no, not here, there -”

After much struggle, Sulu managed to get Chekov’s feet in the right place. He then lifted his sword and began giving instructions. He demonstrated how to block, then had Chekov practice. It did not go particularly well - Chekov was either too slow or too fast and had a poor aim. For every time he hit Sulu's sword, he either missed or hit something else entirely. After a while, Sulu decided to work on some other moves. All of them went about as well as the blocking. 

After an hour, they sat down and drank some water. “Well, sir, I think I have discovered that fencing is not for me today,” Chekov said.

“That’s alright,” Sulu said. “It’s definitely not for everyone.”
