Maya woke up with her heart racing and gasped for air. Another nightmare that began with people she killed or watched die begging for an explanation and ended with her old tormentors coming back to find her. Saavik sat up next to her and placed a gentle hand on Maya’s shoulder.

“I’m sorry.” Maya took a deep breath to try to calm herself. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“I have been lying awake for some time to simply enjoy the physical closeness, as I require very little sleep.” Saavik’s hand traced up Maya’s neck until her fingertips rested on the side of Maya’s face.

“Please…my dreams have been so…violent. I don’t want them to trouble you too.”

“Your dreams cannot harm me. Nor can they harm you.”
