You don’t have to outrun the bear. Her father’s voice, ragged and hushed through his dying breaths, plays in La’an’s mind on an endless loop. The steady pounding of her feet in too-tight shoes on the spongy ground echoes in her ears, deafening but for her racing heart.
They won’t get her.
Not yet, anyway. They will eventually, they get everyone eventually.
But they haven’t gotten her yet, and too many people have died to give her this chance to keep going.
She hears the screams behind her, wonders who failed to outrun their friends this time, and keeps running.
