The warm afternoon autumn sun caressed Verelan’s face, and as she sat in the garden she closed her eyes. She heard footsteps behind her, too loud to belong to her son, and she did not sense the presence of her Vulcan bondmate, T’Lyra. She opened her eyes and turned her head to see her father standing beside her. His face was stern and marked with worry…it always was as of late.
He sighed. “I know we have people sleeping on the floor already, but I hope to convince Maec to take in two more refugees. Children…brothers…twins.”
Verelan took a deep breath. “I think your husband would be a cruel man to turn away a pair of young orphans.”
Her father shook his head and looked down. “Not long ago I would have thought the same, but we can’t save them all, Verelan. We can’t save them all.”
