Nyota was carefully studying the dossiers sent to her by Starfleet Intelligence, looking for any red flags. She knew others would have done most of the background checking, but Nyota's fluency in so many languages was an extension of her studying cultural heritages. Sometimes she spotted patterns that criminal checks missed.
Nor was it merely to suss out those who might be thorns down the road for Starfleet. No, her true specialty in doing this was to find those bright souls that would be best suited to the more subtle tasks of defusing situations before they exploded into Enterprise-worthy events.
