Worth It

Summary:

Screaming then, in command of the Brigade of Cadets at the Academy now.

Work Text:

Harry Decker, Special Agent Afloat for the Starfleet Investigative Service, assigned to the USS Excelsior, watches as his first cousin, once removed marches across the stage at her graduation. As he hears the loudspeaker announce her name, his mind travels further back to a time nearly two decades ago.

When he had somehow been talked into babysitting Decker, so that her mothers, Mary Decker and Kim Sinclair could have a date night in San Francisco. He grins as the sound of that memory slides into his mind.

Decker screams in his ear as he holds her, shaking her, trying to calm her. Of course the shaking causes her to send the strained peas over his dress shirt, with unchecked power.

She had screamed the entire two hours that Mary and Kim had enjoyed a four-course meal. He had wondered then if a phaser set on low stun would’ve had any long-term harm for her development.

As he watches her accept her diploma from the Commander, Starfleet, wearing the four stripes on her swordbelt of the Cadet Captain, he figures that his temporary hearing loss had been worth it.

To see the amazing person she had grown into from that screaming mass of unformed impulse.

He knows that he is coming to the end of his career, but it would be worth it to stay in to see both the chaos she will cause as well as the good that she will do.

He makes a note to check with his detailer, to see if he could get an assignment on any ship that she would be on, or near it.

He would be willing to take a security operator’s job to do it.

The screams echo in his mind with the tumultuous cheers as the hats fly into the air.
