Miles will pull away when you kiss him. He will say, gently and inevitably, “I’m married.”
You’ll be expecting this of course, and will have your answer ready: “But if you weren’t-”
He’ll cut you off with a sensible response: “There’s no point asking whether things would be different in some other life when you have to live in this one anyway.”
You, being an idiot, will press on. “But if it weren’t for Keiko, would it be me?”
Miles won’t look you in the eye when he breaks your heart. “No.”
